Lunch & Recess
Lunch is served free of charge to all students at PS10. Children may also bring lunch from home.
This month's lunch menu can be found here »
Each of the three lunch periods is 50 minutes long and includes 25 minutes of recess in the schoolyard. Children are expected to clean up after themselves at the conclusion of their lunch period, which includes separating their refuse into compost (food scraps, napkins, compostable school lunch trays), recycling (metal, rigid plastic, foil, juice boxes, milk cartons), and landfill (plastic wrap, squeeze pouches).
Recess includes outdoor play all year, weather permitting, so it is vital that children are dressed appropriately for the weather, particularly in winter. Please label coats, scarves, gloves/mittens and hats with your child’s name and class number. Our schoolyard is gated and has space for running, basketball, kickball, hopscotch, four-square and a separate playground area. Most of the children LOVE recess and find that it helps them “loosen up” and focus for the rest of the day.
Lunch & Recess Volunteers
PS10 welcomes parent/guardian volunteers to help support school staff during Lunch & Recess periods. Lunchroom volunteers interact with the children and are crucial to the smooth functioning of lunch and recess time. As a volunteer you will:
- Help kids open lunch contents, give them guidance in the lunchroom, help pack up and gather belongings, assist in trash sorting, and smooth the transition to the next group of diners.
- Help to ensure children play safely in the yard.
Join the Lunch & Recess Committee on Konstella or contact pta@ps10.org for information on how to volunteer.
Inclement Weather / Winter Weather
During inclement weather, the children will have indoor recess. Safety is our foremost concern so the administration and staff pays particular attention to the conditions outside when the weather turns freezing. Several factors are looked at when deciding to send the children outside. These include actual temperature and wind chill, snow accumulation, and ground conditions in the yard.
Appropriate Clothing for Outdoor Play
Please check your child before he or she leaves for school to make sure your student is dressed appropriately for the season and the daily weather. In the winter, this means hats, gloves, boots or closed shoes, and a scarf. In spring, this means avoiding open-toe shoes, backless shoes, and flip-flops. The schoolyard is sunny in all seasons so please apply sunblock daily.
